PhD in Chemical Engineering

General Objectives of the Course

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for the program, candidates must:

• Hold a master's degree or legal equivalent in Chemical Engineering or any other appropriate area, with a minimum mark of 14 (in 20).
• Have a degree of "licenciado" in Chemical Engineering, or in a similar area, with at least 5 years (full-time) of academic training in a high-level course, or equivalent whenever the degree is obtained in a foreign country, and a final minimum mark of 14 (in 20).
• Have an academic, scientific, or professional curriculum that is recognized as certifying ability to undertake this cycle of studies by the Scientific Council of the Faculty of Sciences and Technology of the University of Coimbra.

• Chemical Industries: paper, cellulose, ceramics and glass, cement, petrochemical, plastics, detergents, paints, textiles.
• Environment: domestic wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) and industrial (WWTP), consulting and industrial and environmental licensing, quality & environment.
• Pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries.
• Food and agro-food industry.
• Public sector: central and regional administrations.

The program is offered in a daytime, full-time, face-to-face format, with the possibility of part-time enrollment in the thesis.

Examination Regulations, Assessment, and Grading

Assessment is a pedagogical activity that aims to establish students' competencies and knowledge. Students may only register for exams for classes they are currently registered for. Assessment for each class may include one or more items, such as oral or written exams, written or practical work, individual and group projects, and class participation. Grading is based on a scale of 0 to 20, and a grade of 10 is required to pass.

After completing the program, students will have the capacity for systematic understanding of the scientific field under study, revealing skills and mastery in research methods associated with the area of Chemical Engineering. They will be able to conceive, design, adapt, and carry out relevant research and original work in an autonomous and responsible manner.
